Cultural Diversity Issues in Biodiversity Monitoring—Cases of Lithuania, Poland and Denmark

چکیده
Public participation is a key element in nature conservation in Europe and a necessity for collecting broad scale data on biodiversity and its dynamics. However, vast societal differences exist between eastern and western European countries, resulting in problems for public participation in post-communist states as compared to western countries. Here, we compare diversity in monitoring practices and public participation in countries with different political histories. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic studies conducted in Lithuania and Poland, as well as a rapid assessment in Denmark, we have focused on the historical, cultural and social determinants of the volunteers‘ participation in biodiversity monitoring. Our results indicate the reasons why volunteer involvement—as an expression of a participatory approach—has a lower incidence in the post-communist countries, compared to voluntarism common in occidental democracies. We discuss our results in the context of the main social factors considered to be a legacy of the Soviet regime. OPEN ACCESS Diversity 2010, 2 1131

A Comparative Analysis of Genetic Diversity and Structure of Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus): A New Considerable Established Population in Iran
New wintering populations of Whooper Swan have been recently reported from west Asia, a lack of information about the population and its origin. The understanding the genetic structure and connectivity are crucial for determining strategies of management for its conservation programs. The samples were collected from two populations in northern Iran, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland, where with larg...

In 17 countries the academic networking is organized as a national network organization. The big difference is which types of customers are part of this network organization. The primary customers are of course universities and research organizations. In Denmark these are the only customers mentioned. In most countries the polytechnics are also connected to the backbone. In seven countries libr...

متن کاملTesticular cancer incidence in eight northern European countries: secular and recent trends.
OBJECTIVE Striking geographic variation and marked increasing secular trends characterize the incidence of testicular cancer. However, it is not known whether these patterns have attenuated in recent years and whether they are similar for seminomas and nonseminomas, the two main histologic groups of testicular cancer. METHOD Cancer registry data, including 27,030 testicular cancer cases, were...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Relationship between Altitude and Aspect with Plant Diversity: A Case Study from Nawa Mountain Ecosystem in Zagros, Iran
Mountain ranges cover around one-half of Iran, and Zagros ecosystem is considered as one of an important biological site in Iran. Physiographic factors such as altitude and aspect have an important role in plant species distribution. This study was conducted in the Nawa mountain ecosystem in the western side of Zagros ranges, located in the western zone of Iran in 2016. The experiment aim was t...
